Celebrated for the first time on April 22nd, 1970, the Earth Day celebrates the environment and the protection of the planet. The United Nations celebrates this day every year, one month and one day after the spring equinox. It is now recognized as the most important popular environmental event in the world.

The founder of the event, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, encouraged students to develop environmental awareness projects in their communities. Today, Earth Day is celebrated around the world by more than 500 million people in 184 countries.
